Lots of words and pictures, but no title.

As usual on here, it's been a while since I've updated the blog. But I can say that's also been on purpose. The new works that we've made at Studio Nacho Carbonell, are being shown in Milan this week as part of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, therefore I can now share them with you via this website. Also, typical of this blog, I haven't taken all of the photos I should have, but I hope the ones I have give you a glimpse into the process here.

Picture
Been doing a whole lot of mold making here. I've been making molds for flexible, and even inflatable LED light bulbs/lamps for a new Dutch lighting company, Booo. After these molds are made, they are then casted in silicon or polyurethane rubber.
Picture
Half of the mold and the wax original for the light bulb with the ladder. Nacho really has a thing for ladders.
Picture
My fellow interns taking some sun. From right to left: Ludo (Dutch), Jeroen (Dutch), Dani (Spanish), Mikey (Scottish), Tinne (Danish), Louise (Danish), and Lorena (Spanish). Not pictured: Mario (also Spanish).
Picture
Just before we poured the plaster for this 3 meter long mold of a ladder for one of the light bulbs. I told you he has a thing for ladders.
Picture
Spent a few extra hours making some furniture for the studio. Not the finest work, but we also don't have many tools in the workshop fit for fine woodworking. Fun is fun.
Picture
The wax original for the giant light bulb.
Picture
Halfway there making the mold. This was a big undertaking. I'm struggling trying to give the dimensions of it, but you can see the scale in the next few pictures.
Picture
Nacho with the first of the big light bulbs.
Picture
There's always fun to be had in this studio.
Picture
A better photograph and a view of the light bulb when in it is slightly deflated.
Now, time for some cinematic entertainment. One is a stop motion animation done by a neighbor of the studio, Niels Hoebers (whose name I didn't know until the end credits of the video), and it features one of our light bulbs and ladders. He did a really amazing job with it. The second video is a documentation of a huge project of the studio, Silent Wall. As you see in the video, there's was one girl mainly responsible for the execution of the project, and that is none other than fellow intern, roommate, and friend, Lorena Miguel. The wall will be (actually I think it already is) installed in the restaurant of gallery owner, Rosanna Orlandi, Pane e Acua. The wall is 6 meters by 3 meters (19.5 x 10 in feet), and made entirely out of small pieces of pigmented polyurethane foam.
Well that's it for now. It's through big updates such as this one I realize it's easier to update a little bit at a time, rather than a whole lot rarely. So check back soon.

Insufficient Update

I only have a few photos to show what I've been up to here in Eindhoven, Holland. These photos are few and don't show anywhere near the amount of fun stuff that goes on here. Appreciate them as such, and there's more to come.

Picture
Mold for the sink and counter top.
Picture
With the rebar armature.
Picture
One of the funnest processes in the world.
Picture
Inspecting the face coat... serious business as you can see.
Picture
A quick, unflattering photo of the finished and placed sink and counter top. Definitely more photos, and better photos to come. (The black stuff in the sink is some of the wax that got left behind from the mold. We're working on it.)
Picture
My friend Mario has to take an English exam, and the studying program has some of the best images to go along with it. This is supposed to be a photo of a professor giving a lecture.
Picture
Last night's barbecue. Some things are a good idea no matter where you are in the world.
Picture
These plates didn't stay empty for long.
Picture
The posse's in black. Also, this isn't the entire posse.
Well that's it for now. Also I should point out that there are no pictures of myself or anyone else working on Nacho's pieces. Those pictures will be shared once the pieces have been shown in a few months.

More to come soon. To the North American continent, I send my best. To the European continent, I'll see you all soon.

Haven't updated this in quite a while, but things are happening, and there will be some new work up here soon. But for now, here's a glimpse of what goes on in my mind and in the sketchbook I keep in my back pocket.

Cutting Boards and Goodbyes

Just finished what could possibly be the last batch of Pennsylvania cutting boards, at least for a while. And also, today, actually as I speak, I am moving out of the Kutztown studio I have worked in for the past three years.
Picture
New Walnut cutting boards. $30 each. Food-safe finish. Get one while they last. (See that, trying my salesmanship.)

Truly a weird sight to see my area completely cleaned out.

Old News: Wood and Evil.

Once again, a full month has gone by without a post, but here's a few photos of the Wood and Evil show which showed at Eckhaus on July 1st. I'm horrible at documenting events, so I will just present a few photos, for that is all I unfortunately have.
Picture
Alex Echevarria's "Spiral Woodie" painting. This thing was/is huge... and awesome. I don't think that's the official title, by the way.
Picture
Paintings left to right, Kevin Travers, Darren Beck, Alex Echevarria. And under those are Darren's crude and unusual bats. He was terrified to get pulled over on the way to the show.
Picture
Sydney Howell's Van Halen Tour Shirt, one of my chairs.
Picture
Clockwise from top left: Sydney Howells, Darren Beck, Darren, Martha Oelerich, Martha, Sydney, Darren, and Alex Echevarria.
Picture
Entrance to the dark woods of the Wood and Evil bathroom.
Picture
One of Mark Mahosky's paintings on newspaper, and two paintings by Sydney. "Mrs. Food" is one my favorite paintings ever.
Picture
Paintings and drawings by Kevin Travers, Sydney, Martha, Darren, and a peek into Scott Porcelli's piece for the show.
Picture
A very candid picture of Alicia Atterbury. She filmed a mini-documentary on my work, background, and skating, as well as talking about the rise in Hispanic skateboarders in the Lehigh Valley. Also, you'll get a better glimpse of the show through the video.

Well, after a full month of no posts on here I've got some big news.

I just found out that I've been accepted for an internship with furniture designer (as well as designer of other objects) Nacho Carbonell, in Eindhoven, Netherlands. I'll be there February to July, 2012. Safe to say I'm psyched.

Here are some pictures of Nacho Carbonell's work.

The title pretty much says what this post is. Here are some quick photos of the finished Caterpillar Key End Table and some process photos of some more PA/LV cutting boards I recently finished. Also, the cutting boards are now available at Loose Threads boutique, and Home and Planet in Bethlehem. http://www.loosethreadsboutique.com/

Almost There

Here's what is becoming the "caterpillar key" end table. About one or two more short days of finishing, and it should be done.
Picture
Experimented with a simple base for this one. Not seen in these "in progress" photos, but the under-structure has been sandblasted so that that the texture of the oak is more prominent. And, just wait for the finished photos, I think I've got one more trick up my sleeve for the teal squiggle.
Picture
The caterpillars got their colors today.

As seen in Berkeley: Quarter Sheet Tables

Picture
A few months ago, just prior to visiting good friends in Berkeley, California, I made, and gave them, what was to become the prototype for the coffee tables shown above. This time, I made four tables at one time (4th not shown in above picture), out of a single sheet of walnut plywood. Each table is made from a 2 x 4' piece, and they come flat-packed. All of the joinery is lapped and does not need to be glued and no additional hardware is needed.

On Metamorphosis and Woodworking

When I was about to begin making a butterfly key to stop a crack in a slab I was working on, I realized... I really don't like butterflies. In nature and in woodworking. I've really never cared for them, I actually prefer caterpillars. And while I've just typed and deleted an explanation for this about three times, I'll spare you of what sounded like a bad stand-up bit.
Picture
Here's an example of the traditional butterfly key. And, just about the only stabilizing key you ever see.
Picture
Here are the first two caterpillar keys, just after attaching them. Also, they're about as crudely represented as the butterfly key. Colors and pictures of the finished piece (another end table), soon to come.
